PM’s Uranium U-Turn: Wilson Calls on WA to Harness State’s Potential

The Federal Member for O’Connor, Rick Wilson, today welcomed Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s decision to finalise arrangements enabling Australian uranium exports to India, while calling on the WA Government to match the momentum by lifting its ban on new uranium mines.

“This is positive news and a long overdue, but welcome backflip that recognises growing global demand for Australian uranium and opens new export markets for our resources sector,” Mr Wilson said. “It will deliver real economic benefits across Australia.”

Mr Wilson highlighted O’Connor’s strengths and its vital contribution to the broader economy.

“O’Connor is one of Australia’s premier resources electorates, rich in uranium deposits alongside gold, nickel, and high-quality agriculture. Projects like Deep Yellow’s Mulga Rock are advancing and ready to contribute to production.

The regions of O’Connor power much of Western Australia’s and Australia’s economic engine through world-class mining, resources, agriculture operations.

Developing our uranium potential will create thousands of jobs, drive investment and boost export revenue, further strengthening O’Connor’s contribution to the national economy,” he said.

Mr Wilson called on the WA Labor Government to immediately lift its ban on new uranium mines.

“WA is being left behind while this economic opportunity sits idle. The WA Liberals and Nationals have already committed to lifting the ban, recognising the billions in investment and jobs that responsible uranium development can deliver for regional Western Australia.”

Mr Wilson reinforced the Coalition’s long-standing advocacy.

“The Coalition has consistently championed unlocking Australia’s energy and resources potential to deliver abundant, affordable and reliable power.”

“As Leader of the Opposition Angus Taylor made clear in his Budget Reply speech, energy is the economy. With one-third of the world’s uranium, Australia has a major comparative advantage that must be seized as an economic opportunity to support manufacturing, industry and regional prosperity.”

“We need more supply, not less, to keep costs down and drive growth for Australian families and businesses,” Mr Wilson said.

“A future Coalition Government will continue to back practical policies that cut red tape and take every opportunity to harness our natural strengths. It’s time WA Labor got on board and recognised the economic potential of electorates like O’Connor and Western Australia more broadly.”
