Commode Compliance Leaves Esperance’s Avian Flue Response Flushed

Federal Member for O'Connor Rick Wilson has raised concerns in Federal Parliament about Australia's response to the first confirmed cases of avian influenza at Cape Le Grand National Park near Esperance.

Mr Wilson said Cape Le Grand, renowned for its pristine coastline, had become "ground zero for Australia's first confirmed cases of avian influenza", presenting a serious biosecurity threat to the region and the nation.

He praised local wildlife carers, Swans Veterinary Services and the Esperance community for stepping up to identify cases and help contain the spread.

However, Mr Wilson said the response exposed a significant gap between government claims of preparedness and what is happening on the ground.

As reported by the Kalgoorlie Miner, the Esperance Wildlife Hospital — a purpose-built wildlife biosecurity facility that has even rehearsed its response to highly pathogenic avian influenza — cannot be used because its toilet does not meet certification requirements.

"You couldn't make this stuff up," Mr Wilson said.

"As a result, a single wildlife officer, Lori-Ann, is left managing potentially infected birds from her own home, at her own expense, without any government resources."

Mr Wilson said one person was now fielding every phone call while concerned stakeholders were being directed to an "incomprehensible government website" that was failing to provide adequate information.

"This is not preparedness, it's improvisation under pressure," he said.

"While Minister Collins insists Australia is ready for this situation, it tells a very different story. Right now, policy isn't translating into results.

"If Esperance's purpose-built facility cannot be operationalised during an active threat, what faith can Australians have in the broader national response?"
