Support for zero-emissions nuclear in Collie

More than 67 per cent of respondents to a survey conducted by Federal Member for O’Connor Rick Wilson MP support the Coalition’s plans to build a zero-emissions nuclear power plant at Collie after WA Labor shuts down the Muja coal fired power station.

“This overwhelmingly positive More than 67 per cent of respondents to a survey conducted by Federal Member for O’Connor Rick Wilson MP support the Coalition’s plans to build a zero-emissions nuclear power plant at Collie after WA Labor shuts down the Muja coal fired power station.result accords with my discussion at recent community events in Collie where support for nuclear has been strong, particularly among blue collar workers who have no faith that State Labor’s economic adjustment package will result in long-term, well-paid jobs for them and their families,” Mr Wilson said.

In recent months, Mr Wilson has met with Shire of Collie councillors and staff, on his own, with Shadow Minister for Climate Change and Energy Ted O’Brien and earlier this month with federal Opposition Leader Peter Dutton.

“Most Collie people I have spoken to have an open mind on zero-emissions nuclear as a viable replacement for the coal industry that has been the economic backbone of Collie for generations,” he said.

A month ago, Mr Wilson sent a hard copy newsletter and survey to every household in Collie and followed the survey up in electronic form into the Collie postcode via Facebook advertising.

“This first effort gained 367 responses at 70 per cent approval for zero-emissions nuclear,” he said.

“I did not think that was a large enough sample, so after Mr Dutton’s visit I readvertised my survey on Facebook to Collie and surrounding shires, and the combined survey, now with 559 responses, is showing a solid 67.4% approval.”

Mr Wilson said most Collie residents who had approached him recognised the long-lasting economic benefits that a safe, emissions-free nuclear plant with an operational life of 80 to 100 years could being to Collie.

“I will keep talking with the people of Collie in the lead-up to the upcoming federal election,” he said.

“If elected, the Coalition will formally and comprehensively engage with the community over two‑and-a-half years so that all questions can be answered and any concerns addressed.”

Mr Wilson said the formal community engagement would occur in parallel to a detailed feasibility study that would address all relevant issues.
